If you’re just starting your PMU or brow journey, this step-by-step guide is exactly what you need. Mapping can feel overwhelming at first—but with the right structure, you won’t get lost.
Learn how to achieve precise symmetry and confident outlines using easy-to-follow visuals and professional techniques. Mastering this part means everything you do after becomes easier, cleaner, and more accurate.

Brow Mapping: Freehand vs. Structured Method

There are two main approaches to brow mapping:
The freehand method – more artistic and intuitive, but harder to master at the beginning.
The ruler and thread method – more technical, but incredibly helpful for training your eye and building consistency.

While both are valid, we highly recommend starting with the ruler/thread technique. It helps you develop precision, understand facial symmetry, and avoid common beginner mistakes.
Once your eyes are trained and your hand is confident—you can absolutely transition into a more freehand flow if that’s your style.

Step-by-step Brow Mapping Instructions

01 Skin Preparation

Clean the brow area thoroughly using a gentle antiseptic or alcohol wipe.
Make sure the client’s skin is free from oils and makeup. Pat dry with a lint-free pad.
Stretch the skin gently using gloved fingers to ensure precision and client comfort during mapping.

02 Identifying the Center Point

Identifying the Center Point
To establish the exact center of the face and ensure symmetrical brow placement on both sides. This is a critical foundational step before marking the starting points of each brow.

Client Positioning:

Ensure the client is seated upright with their head in a neutral position.

Ask them to close their eyes gently and relax their forehead muscles.

Tool:

Use a sharpened brow mapping pencil (black or brown, depending on visibility against the skin tone).

Identify the Center of the Face (Glabella):

Gently place the tip of the pencil vertically between the eyebrows, aligned with:

The center of the nose bridge,
Philtrum (Cupid’s bow) of the lips,
And the chin if you visually trace downward.

Mark the Center Line:

Lightly draw a vertical line at the exact center between the brows.

This is called the glabella line or midline, and it serves as a reference point for balancing both brows.

Tip for Accuracy:

Step back and visually double-check the alignment.

Use a brow ruler or mapping string to verify symmetry if needed.

This center mark ensures that both brow heads (starting points) begin at the same vertical distance from the nose bridge.

03 Identifying the Starting Point

Use a sharp brow pencil aligned with the inner corner of the eye and side of the nostril.
Gently mark a vertical line at this point—this will be the start of the brow (Point A).
Double-check symmetry by repeating the process on the other side.

04 Determening the Arch

With the pencil create a diagonal line through the outside border of the iris when the client looks straight.
Mark this point—this is where the bending point (arch) of the brow should be placed.

05 Defining the Tail

From the outer edge of the nostril, draw a diagonal line passing the outer corner of the eye.
This defines the tail end of the brow—ensure the tail is not lower than the front of the brow to avoid a sad expression.

Use a mapping string or fine thread with pigment to create a horizontal guide across the both brows, starting exactly where the brow bone meets the bridge of the nose.
Repeat for the upper horizontal line to establish brow thickness and brow arch.
This ensures both brows sit on the same level and avoids unevenness or drooping.

07 Apply Sticky Mapping Ruler

Apply a transparent brow mapping sticker with marked millimeter lines (like the Deluxe Brows version shown).
This allows for fine adjustments and ensures the brows match in height, length, and overall balance.
Double-check all points on other side align with the opposite brow before beginning any procedure.

08 Outline the Top Brow Line

Using mapping thread, draw a line from the beginning of the brow through the top of the arch.
Align carefully using the ruler sticker to ensure the horizontal balance.
Repeat on the other brow to mirror the angle and length of the lower brow line.

09 Outlining the Bottom Line

Draw a line from the lower part of the brow through the bottom of the arch.
Align carefully using the ruler sticker to ensure the horizontal balance.
Repeat on the other brow to mirror the angle and length of the lower brow line.

10 Defining Top of the Tail

Stretch a pigment-coated mapping thread from the arch to the desired tail end of the brow.
Make sure the thread is parallel to the lower brow bone structure and does not tilt downward, as this can cause a drooping effect.

11 Match and Mirror

Ensure the sticker is applied evenly across the forehead using the glabella (center) line as a reference.
Match and mirror both endpoints with the guide on the ruler.

13 Refine the Shape

Use a thin cotton swab or stick with a small amount of micellar water or brow cleaner.
Sharpen and clean the bottom and top edges of the outline, especially under the arch and tail.
This helps achieve crisp lines for precise outlining or sketching.

12 Connect Full Brow Shape

Using the previously marked top and bottom outlines, trace the full brow shape with your pencil.
Connect all points smoothly, forming a clear symmetrical brow silhouette.
Create a gentle inner curve for the lower part of the tail.
Ensure the tails end on the same horizontal plane and arches match in height and length.

14 Trim/Remove Excess of Hairs

Use a small electric brow trimmer or razor to remove any excess hairs outside the mapped shape.
Work gently around the brow border, avoiding cuts or over-removal.
This step is optional but ideal before permanent procedures or lamination.

15 Final Check before Treatment

Both brows should:

Start and end at the same vertical points.
Be aligned on horizontal planes (top and bottom).
Have matching arch positions.
Have clean outlines ready for your next step.
